Fun times at Ferris State.
Ferris State University Campus Life video is the second video produced by DW Video & Multimedia, LLC. What better way to open the campus life video than from the President of Ferris State University, Dr. David L. Eisler.
I remember going over all the interviews trying to decide the exact segments to use for all the videos. This is a very important part of my job as a storyteller. Finding the right segments to tell the story. Here is the first segment from the Librarian at Ferris – “Whenever you become passionate about whatever it is… you can make a huge impact here on campus'”
We interviewed a Pharmacy student and hearing his advice about coming to Ferris as a freshman… great advise. Another student offered input about joining a student organization to make new friends and gain experience. Making it real and telling Ferris’s story is the approach DW Video took when producing these videos.
“The second I came onto campus I knew I was at home.” You know when you visit a campus and you get that feeling this is going to be home for the next four years. I got the feeling right away” All great advice from other students.

Producing three videos for Ferris State University Admissions Department.
Back in May, Ferris State University Admissions Department called on DW Video to produce three videos. The videos, Welcome to Ferris, Campus Life and Bulldog Parent Testimonial are going to be used for campus tours. Ferris and other Colleges and Universities all over Michigan are giving tours to potential students and parents deciding on where to send their son or daughter.
Working closing with the Ferris State University Admissions Department we set off to create the three videos. After numerous days of on-location video, hours of making phone calls, working with Jason and Shelli setting up locations, interviews and events and days of editing – producing the three videos was completed.
Our first meeting was with a group of nine Ferris State University Admissions Department members. Knowing that each of them had their own idea of what the videos should look like. Asking them to provide links to videos similar of what they liked provided us a plan. Without a plan, no project would ever be completed… makes sense doesn’t it.
Working with members of the Creative team, Dan Salas, Frank Krywicki and Ben Slater we began capturing what would end up being nearly a half of terabyte of raw footage.

Interviewing Ferris students to tell the story.
The story behind the Ferris State University-Michigan video shoot. The challenges and our approach to making the ‘Welcome to Ferris State University’ video.
Based on the Buy Local Video Profiles approach used by DW Video is to make it real. Let the key personal, customers and in this case professors and students tell the story. Video Profiles are considered as one of the best methods for communicating with audiences. It is much easier to consume the visual image than to read something.

Putting together the interviews took around 15 hours.
Capturing b-roll was a fun process. Meeting some wonderful students.
Working with Ferris State University Admissions the planning and organization (producing) of three videos: Welcome to Ferris, Campus Life and A Parents Perspective. Ended up with over 300 gigs of HD video. NOTE: Back-up your data on multiple backup drives.
One of the main challenges was being awarded the contract during the summer when most of the major programs were not in session. Then not being able to get the shots needed over the summer. Plus with the deadline needed 14 days after the start of school meant we needed to shoot the first week when none of the programs were up to speed. Then to meet the deadline two of the videos were edited in a marathon edit session Tuesday – Thursday. 10-19 hours per day. For all your video and media needs – contact Duane at 231-937-5420.

Aerial Video for a unique perspective of the Big Rapids area.
Working with Ferris Photographic Services capturing some aerial video of the Big Rapids area.
In our Welcome to Ferris video we also needed to promote Big Rapids. When doing the research for this project we learned that potential students and parents wanted to know more about campus life and the Big Rapids community.
We wanted to promote Big Rapids in a variety of ways so we went to the air to get a unique perspective of the community.
In our research for the project we worked with the client to understand their need and audience. Then went out and interviewed students, professors and staff to tell the story.
What we found to be the unique branding statement for Ferris was:
1) Small friendlier campus, 2) At Ferris you can get to know your professors and 3) Ferris is recognized nationally for academic excellence and hands on learning.
GO BULLDOGS!!!!
For this project we had to not only look at what Ferris offered,but also what the community of Big Rapids offered.
The results was to promote Big Rapids is to promote Ferris. Welcome to Ferris and Go Bulldogs!!!

In today’s media driven, fast paced world it is best to create a series of short videos instead of one long one. In our ‘Welcome to Ferris State University’ project we are producing three videos. 1) Welcome to Ferris, 2) Campus Life and 3) A Parents Perspective.
Breaking up your message in multiple videos is an ideal way to promote your business.
Breaking the message into three videos instead of one keeps the focus directed to the audience. This provides you the opportunity to sell, introduce and ask for the sale.
