What is a video blog

video-blogWhat is a video blog?  A video blog is a blog which uses video as the medium , think of it as a web television show.  Vlog, as it is shorten to often combine embedded video (or a video link) with supporting text, images, and tags. YouTube is a popular place to host your Video Blog.

As mentioned YouTube is very populat place for video bloggers.  They allow participants to produce their web videos and provide a great place to share their content and views.  Often times the video blog is done with one camera. With our upcoming video blog we will be using tow or three cameras to record our program.  More on this later.

A good article on producing a video blog is at WikiHow.  In their article they cover these main topics: Think of a topic to make vlogs about. Get a Youtube account, and give your channel an attractive name. Make about ten or more REALLY GOOD videos. Post one of those videos to a related, well-known video as a video response. Keep being active – nobody is going be interested if you don’t post any videos for years. Edit your videos! This article is a good resource for the start-up.   COMMERCIAL BREAK: Need video production help?  Want to use our studio to shoot your video blog?  Contact DW Video 231-937-5420. A Video Blog can be fun.  It can also provide a source of income.  For example through your blog you are looked at as the expert.  You can promote your book, a product, a service.  NOTE: Do not make your video blog an advertisement.  People will not watch, share and become engaged with you.  Have your pitch be a soft sell approach.  For example, ‘The following video is supported by DW Video & Multimedia, Michigan’s Video Production Resource”. Then continue on with your information.

In upcoming articles I will be providing more info on video blogs. You see I am in the process of setting up a YouTube Vblog for DW Video and promoting one of my faviorate topics.  More on that later. Thank you.  BTW, if you have something to share on your experience with video blogging, please share.

What goes into a video and media production

From our last post on the cost of video/media it is fair now to to turn to “What goes into a video and media production”.  Lets dive straight into the elements of a video.

1) Concept:  Does the concept require a script?  Does it require a series of interviews to tell the story?  Who is the audience?  What is the result you are looking for from the video?

2) Parts and Pieces:  What do I mean?  There are many aspects of video production and the parts that go into a video.  To begin with where do we go to get the video – more on that in number three.  Graphics, Animation, Soundtrack, Actors are a few items that in most cases need to begin right away to be ready by post time.

3) Location video. How many days will it take to acquire the raw video for your project?  Is it hours or days… important to know because this has a lot to do with total cost.

4) The type of gear used.  Is it 2K, 4K, RED or Digital SLR 1080HD.  Do we own the equipment or have to rent it?  Makes a huge difference on your cost.

5) Creative Team – who do we on the production is key to the end result.  Writers, Camera People, Lighting, Animators, Graphic Design, Editors and more.  Who is needed to make your production successful?

I found this on-line and found it interesting.  So what goes into a video and media production?  Here is a list I found on-line.  This is an average from around the United States.  Please note that according to these prices DW Video is low.

What is the cost of video and media production

What is the cost of video and media productionWhat is the cost of video and media production?  The phone rings with most all the calls begin with: “I need a video on my business”, “I need a website for my business” I have a box of film/slides/videotapes that we need on DVD”.  Followed by ‘What is the cost”?

Typical, I do the same thing.  So why even write an article on it?  Simple, to answer the question of what is the cost of a video and media production project to inform and to educate customers and prospects.

For businesses my standard response is:

1. Who is your audience?
2. Do you have a concept in mind or are you looking to us for guidance?
3. What’s your budget?

You see in order to answer that question, unfortunately we have to ask more questions.  The short answer is we have a Buy Local Video Profile package that for $495 to $595 we can create a video profile of 1-2 minutes.  This means 2-3 hours at your site to record the interview and capture the b-roll needed to support the interview.  Need more time we then add an hourly rate charge.  We know not every video fits into the Buy Local Video Profile box.  We communicate with you and work through the production process.

Some concepts, like the Buy Local Video Profile can be made very simply. However, more complicated projects with high-end visual effects, motion graphics, complicated camera moves take more time, thus cost more.  Knowing your budget before we begin helps in so many ways.  We do not waste time.  We begin creating and fine tuning your concept and outcome.  We realize budget is important, your end result is important.  Communication from the beginning is key to success.  When you hire DW Video & Multimedia, LLC we are not only getting a production.  You are also getting expertise from our creative team.

So what does that mean?  It means if you have a project that costs $12,000 to produce and you only have $5000.  You have to understand we will have to scale back in the production.  Now can we scale back and still meet your needs?  Communication.  I Love Porsche’s.  Does not mean I can run out and get a $50,000 new one.  I may have to settle for one closer to my budget.  I still get the car but not as new.

What is the cost of video and media production is easier for consumer, film transfers and video to DVD.  This is based on exactly what you have.  Knowing how many 50 foot reels you have or how many videotapes and how much time is on each.  Simple to know what is the cost of video and media production project will be.

In our next post “What goes into a video and media production?  We will cover some of the items involved with a production and what some of the big boys charge.

Producing a Video

Producing a Video

Producing a Video is all about communication. Call Duane 231-937-5420.

Producing a video is a lot like ordering a sub sandwich. You begin with the bread or wrap, then a selection cheeses, meat, cold or warmed, then an assortment of veggies and toppings. There are many ways of building your sandwich.  Similar, but different each time you build this tasty meal.

The secret to a great sandwich (video) is communication. Once the sandwich is complete, taking off the the tomato may be an easy fix, however taking off the mayonnaise is more difficult. The better the communication the better the end result.

Please note: Since the goal is to make the sandwich your way, even removing the mayonnaise can be done.

Now that we have had our meal, lets move on to tips on producing a better video.

The process begins with the concept. We look at your target audience, what is the best way to reach them, what are their needs, comments and concerns. From this point we come up with a plan.  It is okay to change the plan, but be aware – time is money.  The more changes, which is not always a bad thing, the more it may cost.

The basic steps in producing a video include: 1) Concept / Script. More an more of our videos are told by the client, staff and customers through testimonials. In that case the script is a list of questions that are targeted to the person telling the story. This is the blueprint to the video and is a guide in getting the most out of each interview.

2) In the case where we have a script, the next phase is recording the narrator. Many choices here. A staff person could do the read, At DW Video we have a list of local narrators. And through the power of the web, there are businesses we can choose from that have a number of narrators to choose from. Options, yes there are options.

3) On-Location Digital Videotaping (I know we do not use tape anymore – but heck, you knew what I mean). This includes recording the interviews and acquiring the b-roll video needed to tell your story.  Proper planning at this stage keeps us on track and on-budget.  For example you are a retail store and need shots of people browsing and purchasing.  Do not assume customers off the street want to be in your video.  It is best to have a group of people brought in for the shoot.

4) Once the video is acquired it is back to the studio to edit.   Up to this point of the production if special graphics and/or animations were needed these would be in production already.  Based on a script we then edit the b-roll into each segment and we are ready to show you the first version.  When interviews are used we take the time to pick the best segment and then edit in the b-roll.

5) Review and upon final approval a DVD is authored, files are encoded for the web and the final product is ready to share.
